How to move a dishwasher

Are you moving into a new house, apartment or condominium and want to bring your household appliances, including your dishwasher, with you? Whether you need to move your dishwasher to another unit in the same building, a few blocks down the street, to a neighboring city or over a long distance, you’re better off being prepared and knowing how to proceed. For ultimate peace of mind, it’s recommended to call on the services of a specialized professional moving company that has the necessary experience, expertise and equipment to move a dishwasher safely and efficiently.

Before moving your dishwasher

Prior to moving your dishwasher or any other household appliance, you must take a number of precautions. The fact is that moving these types of electrical equipment involves a different method than the one used to move furniture or boxes. In the case of a dishwasher, you will need to drain it before you can move it. To do this, just follow the steps outlined below.

1. Unplug the dishwasher

Before you do anything, to ensure your safety and avoid any risk of electrocution, you should unplug your dishwasher from the electrical outlet and secure the cord to the top of the appliance with tape.

2. Turn off the water supply

Turn off the water and disconnect the supply hose, which is thinner than the drain hose. Any water remaining inside the hose will spill out, so it’s a good idea to put the end in a bucket or other container and line the floor with rags or paper towels.

3. Evacuate any standing water

Remove the water from your dishwasher’s drainage system by placing the drain hose in a suitable recipient located near the floor. You can tilt the appliance slightly to help the water drain out more easily.

4. Clean the filter

Remove the lower rack, wipe away any residue, and thoroughly clean the filter and filter assembly.

Transporting and installing your dishwasher

A dishwasher weighs between 30 and 55 kilograms. Two people can move it easily with a dolly or moving straps. However, you’ll still need to be careful, as this appliance doesn’t have anything to hold on to. Before moving it, remove both racks and close the door, fastening it shut with tape, if necessary. Also, be sure to attach the hoses and the electrical cord firmly to the back of the dishwasher. In the moving truck, secure the appliance with blankets and straps to prevent it from moving around during transport.

Once you reach your destination, there’s no need to wait, as you would when moving a refrigerator. You can reconnect your dishwasher and put it in place immediately. Reattach the water supply hose, plug the electrical cord into a properly grounded outlet and reconnect the drain hose. Finally, replace the upper and lower rack.

If you aren’t going to use your dishwasher right away or if you need to put it in storage briefly while you’re moving, leave the door open to prevent the proliferation of bacteria, mold and mildew.
